The Aosta Valley is neighbouring Switzerland in the north and France in the west. The area covers 3.263 km2 of land and has a population of approximately 120.000 inhabitants.
The region has 2 official languages: Italian and French. Nevertheless, the majority of the local population speaks 'Arpitan', a Franco-Provencal dialect.
The Aosta Valley is like an island surrounded by Europe’s highest mountain massifs and by prestigious "fourthousanders" like the Mont Blanc, Matterhorn, Gran Paradiso, Monte Rosa and Grand Combin. With its majestic mountains, steep slopes and lovely waters, the scenery is imposing, rough and yet so fairy-like and vital.

The valley of Valpelline itself extends from the North East of Aosta to the Matterhorn at the Swiss border. It has a sunny and dry climate. This mountainous landscape, which is not yet spoiled by tourism, is ideal to savour the various pleasures and delights of alpinism.
The location where the bivouac will be built, at an altitude of 2530m, is about 250m higher than the abandoned and peaceful mountain pasture called Pra de Dieu. A stream runs by the pasture at the foot of the northern slope of Becca di Luseney (3504m).
