Travel report April 2006

Here you can read the complete report of the short trip to Italy from April 8 to April 12 2006. Pictures of this trip can be found here.

On April 8, Arjen and his friend Jules Rosheuvel, leave for Bionaz. They want to enjoy a short climbing vacation in the mountains and, at the same time, use the opportunity to see Pra de Dieu with their own eyes.
A first meeting with the President of the Guides de Valpelline, Mr. Maurizio Gaillard and mountain guide Sergio Petey takes place. The latter has participated in the project of a recently built bivouac. So we reckon he already should know his way around... We hope he will be able to help our cause through his advice and suggestions.

Later -while enjoying a good glass of wine and in the company of Reverend don Ivano Reboulaz, mountain guide Pietro Giglio and Maurizio Gaillard- Arjen's drawings of the hut are being studied.
Here, people are not familiar with vegetation roofs.
It does not take long before the small assembly speaks out its preference about the designs. The bowed design is favorite because of the artistic character… However, the living space would have to be enlarged a little. The toilet accomodation, which will be arranged by the Guides, will be placed outside the hut.
We learn that the helicopter that will help us with the transportation of the building materials, can lift up to 700 kg. This allows us to prefabricate in the valley walls and other parts of the hut and send them up only at the last moment. Logistically this is a step in the right direction.

But before even thinking about starting the works, the construction plans have to be legalised. For that we now first need to arrange an official drawing. The legalisation process, of which Maurizio will take care, will take about one year.

It is unfortunate but the risk of avalanches prevents Arjen to go to Pra de Dieu. Pietro Giglio, who works -next to his activities as a mountain guide- for RAI Aosta (tv), promises us to make a small movie of our building site once the weather has bettered.

Oh, this 'meadow of God'! There are not enough words to accurately describe its beauty. Pra de Dieu is disarming, enchanting, sunny and utterly charming. The grounds are covered with flowers and there are not less than two mountain streams!
This place, which is known by every local inhabitant, can be reached via a path that leads past a chapel and a ruin. Then it passes, with grand curves, under a rock and finally goes all up via the left side.
From here another path can be followed to the col Dzalou from where Mount Dzalou can be climbed. Besides that, Pra de Dieu is strategically important for climbing Becca di Luseney.

Purely by coincidence, Arjen encounters the innkeeper of Auberge “La Bâtise”. 'Papà albergatore' Dirk Kerremans, who is of Belgian origin, rapidly is full of enthousiasm about our project and is more than willing to lend us a helping hand. And mind you: the auberge, with its view on Pra de Dieu, will form an excellent 'base camp' for the works!

Finally, Arjen meets with the Mayor of Bionaz, Mr. Armando Chentre. He is really enthusiastic about the project and the designs. The two men speak about various matters such as the financial aspect and the name of the project. Arjen makes an apology on our behalf for the denomination of project and website. Because of the fact that Pra de Dieu is part of the City of Bionaz, names like “Bivacco Bionaz” or “Bivacco Pra de Dieu” probably would have been more suitable…
Remains to be said that the final name for the bivouac is still open and could be anything.

Conclusion: the project lives!
Not only in the Netherlands but also in Italy people abundantly think and vividly talk about it.
It was a good trip during which we met lots of people and got new and refreshing insights. Some important part of the preliminary work now already has been done. This does not mean, however, that the working group can afford to be lazy in June…
